Greece looks simple to plan and is not. The islands are the reason people come, but the islands are also the reason trips go wrong: a ferry cancelled for wind, three islands squeezed into eight days, a hotel with a stunning photograph and two hundred steps between it and dinner, a flight home booked the same morning as a crossing.
What I do is design the logistics so they disappear, then fill the days with the parts of Greece that do not appear in a search result — the Acropolis before the queues, a captain who knows which cove is empty, a taverna up a village road where the menu is whatever came in that morning.
Most of my Greece trips follow the same sound structure: Athens to land and adjust, one or two islands with real time in each, and a buffer night before flying home. Within that frame, whether you want caldera sunsets, beach clubs, gorge hikes or long lunches is entirely yours to choose.
Where to go in Greece, and why.
Athens
Two or three nights at the start
Athens is not a city to skip on the way to the islands. Two nights, three if you can, with the Acropolis at opening time and a private guide who can make the marble mean something. The Acropolis Museum in the afternoon, Plaka and Anafiotika for dinner, and a rooftop with the hill lit up behind you. I often add Cape Sounion at sunset — an hour down the coast to a temple above the sea, and the best possible first evening in Greece.
Santorini
Honeymoons, views, two to three nights
Santorini is a view you sleep inside. Oia is the famous one and the busiest; Imerovigli has the same caldera view with a fraction of the foot traffic; Firostefani sits between the two and walks easily into Fira. Almost every caldera hotel is built into a cliff, which means steps — I match properties to how much climbing you actually want. The sunset everyone photographs from Oia is better watched from a catamaran, and the island's best hours are early morning, before the cruise passengers come ashore.
Mykonos
Celebrations, beach clubs, villas
Mykonos has two personalities and you get to choose. The town is beautiful at eight in the morning and at ten at night: whitewashed lanes, Little Venice, good shopping that is not only souvenirs. The southern beaches are where the clubs are, glossy and loud and genuinely fun if that is what you came for. Villas make brilliant sense for a group, with a chef and a driver arranged — and if you would rather a quiet cove and a boat day, I will put you on the north side instead and you will barely notice the crowds exist.
Crete
A week, food, real Greece
Crete is the island for travelers who want more than a view. Chania's Venetian harbour and old town are the loveliest base in Greece, the food is the best in the country, and the island is big enough that a week never repeats itself: Knossos and the Minoan sites, the Samaria gorge, Elafonissi's pink sand, mountain villages where lunch lasts three hours. It is also a genuinely good choice in late September and October, when the smaller islands start to close.

The part that ruins itineraries
This is where most self-planned Greece trips come apart. Ferries between the Cyclades are frequent in summer and sparse in shoulder season, they are cancelled for wind more often than travelers expect, and a 'two hour' crossing plus port transfers can eat a whole day. Domestic flights from Athens to Santorini, Mykonos or Crete are cheap and fast, and often the right answer. My rules: never connect a ferry to a same-day international flight, build a buffer night in Athens before you fly home, and never plan more than two islands in ten days. I book the crossings, the port transfers and the flights as one chain so nothing depends on you sprinting.
Private boat charters
The day you will remember
One private boat day changes a Greek island trip. A skippered catamaran out of Santorini, Mykonos or Naxos gives you the coves the ferries pass, swimming stops with nobody else in them, lunch cooked on board, and the sunset from the water rather than from a crowd. I choose crews I know, size the boat to your group, and build the route around where the wind actually allows that week — with champagne and a cake on board if there is something to celebrate.

Planning your Greece trip
When to go. Late May through June and again in September are the best weeks: warm sea, everything open, and the islands still breathing. July and August are hot, busy and expensive. By late October the small islands begin to close, and Athens and Crete become the better plan.
How long. Eight nights for Athens plus one island. Ten to twelve for Athens plus two. Two weeks lets you add Crete or a slower, less-photographed island without rushing a single travel day.
